# Logs and debugging

> Check status, read logs and find out why something is broken

When something is wrong, ask Monk to look. It reads workload status and logs from your cluster, and your coding agent can then fix the code or the `MANIFEST`.

## Before you start

* Your app is deployed. See [Deploy an existing app](/guides/deploy-existing-app).

## Ask Monk

**Status:**

```
/monk is everything healthy?
/monk what's running on this cluster?
```

**Logs:**

```
/monk show me the last 200 lines of the api logs
/monk check the worker logs for errors
/monk follow the api logs while I click through the signup page
```

Monk returns a bounded tail of the logs (up to 2,000 lines) and can follow new lines for a short time. Logs can contain sensitive output, so Monk quotes only the lines that matter.

**Describe the problem:**

```
/monk the frontend returns 502, find out why
/monk the api keeps restarting
/monk the api can't connect to the database
```

Monk checks status, logs and the running configuration, and tells you what it found. If the cause is in your code, your coding agent makes the fix. Monk does not edit application code.

**Template problems:**

```
/monk check the MANIFEST for errors
```

## What you review

Reading status and logs needs no approval. Any fix that changes infrastructure, such as a redeploy, a restart, a config change or a new node, opens an approval in the [local dashboard](/getting-started/local-dashboard) first.

## Redeploy or stop a service

```
/monk redeploy the worker
/monk stop the old cron service
```

Redeploying, stopping, deleting or purging a workload opens an approval. Purging also removes its data.

## Limits

* Monk has no shell access into containers.
* Monk reads logs and status, not application metrics dashboards. For alerts on crashes and resource use, set up [Watcher](/guides/watcher-and-alerts).

## Still stuck?

```
/monk report a bug
```

This sends a report with environment details to the Monk team. There is no reply channel.
