# Scale and resize

> Add or remove machines, change sizes and run more copies of a service

Change how much capacity your app has: more or fewer machines in the cluster, different machine types, or more copies of a service.

Monk does not scale on its own. You ask, review the plan and approve. The orchestrator does restart and reschedule managed workloads within its policies. See [Watcher and recovery](/concepts/watcher-and-recovery).

## Before you start

* Your app is deployed to a cluster. See [Deploy an existing app](/guides/deploy-existing-app).

## Ask Monk

**Add machines to the cluster:**

```
/monk add two more nodes to this cluster
/monk add a node with an nvidia-tesla-t4 GPU
```

**Remove machines:**

```
/monk remove the extra node I added yesterday
```

**Change machine size.** Add nodes of the new size, move work onto them, then remove the old ones:

```
/monk move this cluster to larger machines
```

**Run more copies of a service or give it more resources.** These are settings in the `MANIFEST`. Your coding agent edits it and Monk deploys the change:

```
/monk run three copies of the worker
/monk give the api 2 GB of memory
```

**Get a recommendation:**

```
/monk is this cluster too big or too small for what's running?
```

Check the valid regions, machine types and GPU types first if you're not sure:

```
/monk which instance types can I add in this region?
```

## What you review

The plan in the [local dashboard](/getting-started/local-dashboard) shows the machines to add or remove, the services that move, and the estimated cost after the change. Removing a node can move or stop the workloads on it, so check the list. Nothing changes until you approve.

## What you get

The cluster and services at the new size. Check them:

```
/monk show the cluster nodes and what runs on each
```

## Upgrading Monk on the cluster

```
/monk upgrade Monk on this cluster
```

Nodes are upgraded one at a time.
