- Trying Monk doesn’t replace production. For an app that’s already running, Monk builds a separate deployment from source. Moving data and switching traffic are decisions you make later. Expect to pay for both environments while they run side by side.
- Keep one owner per resource. Don’t let two infrastructure tools manage the same resource at the same time.
Your coding agent alone
A coding agent can write infrastructure code, call provider APIs and run deployment commands. What it builds lives in files, memory and whatever tools you connect, and you maintain the scripts, credentials and recovery behavior. Monk adds an orchestrator that holds the app and resource model between sessions, enforces permissions and validation, and shows deployment plans on a separate approval screen. Credentials go into a local form instead of the conversation. Pick your agent alone if you have a small, stable setup, or a deployment system your agent already operates reliably, and you want direct control of the scripts. Pick Monk if you want deployment, service connections, runtime state and controlled operations together in your coding-agent workflow. Monk is one more system to understand. If your current scripts already do the job, weigh whether it removes enough work to be worth adding.Terraform
Terraform provisions provider resources from configuration and keeps resource state. HCP Terraform adds managed workflows, including health assessments and drift detection, and you can import existing resources. Building and releasing the app, and recovering its workloads, come from the runtime and pipelines you set up around it. Monk starts from the application: deployment, service connections and workload operations in one system. Pick Terraform if your team has invested in modules, reviews and pipelines, needs its provider ecosystem, and wants infrastructure changes as versioned code in your existing process. Pick Monk if you want to get an app and its dependencies running from a coding agent, then use the same system for status, recovery and approved changes. Monk’s new deployment is not a Terraform import or a migration of Terraform state. Keep existing resources under one owner until you deliberately move data and traffic.Kubernetes
Kubernetes already reconciles desired state and recovers workloads through its controllers. Tools like Crossplane extend that to external resources. Builds, ingress, external services and delivery come from the platform you assemble around it. Monk runs workloads on its own orchestrator, which also manages the supported cloud resources and services around them. It doesn’t use Kubernetes underneath. Pick Kubernetes if you need its ecosystem, custom controllers and native tooling, or your team already runs a good platform on it. Pick Monk if you want an agent-driven workflow across deployment, supported cloud services, connections and operations without first building a Kubernetes platform. Monk doesn’t replace the Kubernetes ecosystem feature for feature. Compare your actual platform requirements with Monk’s integrations before moving an app.Hosting platforms
Platforms such as Railway, Render, Heroku and Fly.io host your app on their infrastructure with an integrated deployment workflow. Several have features people sometimes credit only to Monk: Railway has agent workflows and whole-environment PR previews, Render Blueprints define connected services and databases in YAML, Heroku Review Apps create temporary apps for pull requests, and Fly.io gives direct control over machines, health checks and scaling. Monk runs everything in your own cloud account. Pick a hosting platform if your app fits its services and regions and you value a managed hosting experience. Pick Monk if you need resources in your own cloud account and want the app and its supported services managed together. Owning the cloud account means owning provider access, quotas, data policies and billing. Supported integrations don’t guarantee that every app moves between providers unchanged.Costs
With Monk, your cloud provider bills you for resources directly. Your Monk subscription and your coding agent’s subscription are separate costs.Quickstart
